How to Look Good as You Age
by Cooper Elling
Staying fit and healthy as you age is important to feeling great and it is one of the keys to enjoying life to the fullest. One of the easiest ways to ensure that you do this is to establish good habits early on. Your body benefits greatly from being healthy and consistent your entire life, and it’s much easier to maintain good health than to try and reverse bad health later on.
Don’t Confuse Young With Healthy!
Just because you’re young it doesn’t mean you’re already
creating good habits
for life. When you’re young, you can get away with a lot more and not notice. Maybe you smoke cigarettes, but you can still play basketball. Maybe you have a terrible diet of junk food, but you’re not fat. Don’t kid yourself, just because you still feel okay now doesn’t mean you’re being healthy and it will only catch up with you later.
Life is better when you feel your best. Some of the most fulfilling moments in life where you experience that pure “natural high” are when you’re being active. Your self-confidence is higher when you look your best and know that you are in command of your mind and body. Work and play are easier and more enjoyable.
If you don’t have one already, try to find a passion for food and cooking. Learning to cook when you’re younger is a skill that will stay with you for life. You will learn to make food that you love and that is good for you. When you go to the grocery store, make sure you come home with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Opt out of fast food. Pull out that old lunch box and bring your lunch to work. Another benefit of cooking dinner is that you can make too much and have delicious home cooked leftovers the next day.
Drink Well
Drink plenty of water
, cut the soda and use
use moderation with alcohol
. This will help you cut a lot of processed sugar out of your diet, which is great for reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes down the road. Have fun with friends, have a few drinks, but keep everything in reason. Your liver will return the favor later in life when it has been taken care of early on.. This will help you

Sleep Well
Get those 8 hours!
If you need to wake up early, try to turn the TV off an hour earlier and get to bed. You can record American Idol and watch it later. It’s more important to catch those ZZZ’s than to hear what Simon has to say about the next pop icon.
You’re As Old As You Feel
You hear it all the time. I live in the mountains and am surrounded by people who you would think are 27 only to find out they are 40 with kids! Why? These people are out having fun. They are skiing, biking, climbing, running and swimming. To them their age is just a number and a reason to laugh when they beat their younger competition. As you age, don’t think “I’m getting to old for this,” just get out there and do it!
Think Ahead
Life is about living in the moment, but you shouldn’t neglect the future. Be active and make healthy decisions when you’re younger and it will lead to a much better life when you’re older. I’ve see too many happy 70+ year olds out on the mountain skiing to think that you’re active life ends at any certain age.
