Self development is getting to know oneself through study and the learning and implementation of techniques to reach our true potential in our spiritual, personal and professional life.
These studies and techniques aim to increase our understanding of self and the world around us and bring us balance, peace and harmony in our lives.
In our quest to become the best I that we can be, we might focus on some of the following:_
- Becoming more self aware
- Enriching and improving our mind through study and learning
- Developing our spirituality by learning about different religions and philosophies and reflection on how these relate to our own circumstances and the world around us.
- Searching for true happiness and taking steps to improve our quality of life and that of those around us.
- Working on improving our social skills
- Developing professional skills
- Learning about different personality traits of the people around us so that we can better understand and interact with them.
- Improving our motivation, without depending on others
Increasing self awareness means learning about oneself, getting to know one's own strengths and weaknesses, defining goals and striving to achieve them, while remaining true to one's values and principles.
In order to grow as a person, one first needs to acknowledge and understand one's limitations, and then be ready to challenge and push their bounderies in the quest to improve one’s own knowledge and self awareness.
We are not living in a vacuum and it is necessary to interact with the people around us. If this is not going well, we need to sollicit feedback and try to understand how we are perceived by others. We will have to adjust our style of interacting and our approach if necessary.
Most people believe that the way they feel is a result of the things that happen to them in life, good or bad. The theory of positive thinking is that our thought patterns and the way we think about and react to life's experiences have more impact on how we feel than the actual events themselves. In other words, it is not the things that happen to us that are good or bad, but the way we perceive and react to them that results in either a positive or negative effect on our psyche.
